There are several disciplines of motorsport and depending on your budget there are different levels at which you can compete. For Club events such as our PCA and PCT championships you just need to be a member of either the organising or an invited club, you do not need to hold an MSA competition licence. The next step up from these Club events is to enter a regional or national championship where the rounds may be held throughout the country but you will need a MSA competition licence to enter these events.


Production Car Autotests (PCA):
These involve driving the car on a timed, predetermined route with penalties added for striking markers and not completing the test correctly. The tests are designed so that standard cars can negotiate the route with no reversing or handbrake manoeuvres. You are required to have a passenger in the car and they can assist with navigating you around the route.
CARS: Standard production cars with current MoT certificate, special classes may be allowed.
MSA LICENCE: Not required for Club events, Non-Race Clubman for most championships
DRIVING AGE: 14 years with an experienced passenger who holds a full RTA Licence
PASSENGER: Yes (12 years plus)
ENTRY FEE: from £15 for club events


Autotests:
Involve driving the car on a timed, predetermined memorised route, with penalties added for striking markers, bad positioning on the lines and not completing the test correctly. Unlike PCAs these tests will included changes of direction, stopping astride markers and various manoeuvres. The tests are normally tighter than the standard turning circle of a car.
CARS: Standard road cars to special classes
MSA LICENCE: Non-Race Clubman
DRIVING AGE: 16 years in saloon cars limited up to 1400 cc or 17 years plus
PASSENGER: No
ENTRY FEE: £25-£35


Car Trials (CT or used to be PCT):
Off-road driving experience competing on grassy surfaces. The cars have to maintain unassisted forward motion through the set sections. The venue chosen should be non-damaging to standard cars however some cars do have low bumpers that may get damaged.
CARS: Standard road car to modified classes
MSA LICENCE: Not required for Club events, Non-Race Clubman for most championships
DRIVING AGE: 14 years with an experienced passenger who holds a full RTA Licence
PASSENGER: Yes (12 years plus)
ENTRY FEE: £15-£30


Sporting Trials:
The same idea as Car Trials but is an extreme development of them, with steep and slippery climbs.
CARS: Specialist rear wheel drive cars with independent brakes
MSA LICENCE: Non-Race Clubman
DRIVING AGE: 16 years with an experienced passenger who holds a full RTA licence
PASSENGER: Yes (14 years plus)
ENTRY FEES: £25-£35


AutoSolo:
This newest discipline of motorsport enables competitors to gain car control skills and enjoy competition in their standard road cars around a course of cones and against the clock with no reversing.
CARS: Standard road cars
MSA LICENCE: Not required for some events, Non-Race Clubman for national championships
DRIVING AGE: 16 years plus
PASSENGER: No
ENTRY FEE: £20-£30


Sprints and Hillclimbs:
A Speed / Track event timed. taking place on a permanent track with a sealed surface. All cars can take part but need a timing strut to be fitted. Specially approved racing overalls and a helmet are needed. Head restraining devise will soon also be needed.
CARS: Standard road cars to specialist race cars
MSA LICENCE: Non-Race National B
DRIVING AGE: 16 years plus
PASSENGER: No
ENTRY FEE: From £100


Rallycross:
Is a speed event taking place on a permanent track with both sealed and unsealed surfaces.
CARS: Bespoke/Specialist race cars
MSA LICENCE: Non-Race National B
DRIVING AGE: 14 years plus
PASSENGER: No
ENTRY FEE: £150-£250 per round


Stage Rally (Single Venue):
A speed event taking place on a on a pre designed course or ‘Stage’ which can be sealed, unsealed or a combination of both. The venue can consist of one of more stages throughout the event. Cars must be specially prepared with many safety devises fitted following the MSA Blue Book rulings. Specially approved racing overalls, helmets and head restraining devise are needed are needed.
CARS: Bespoke/Specialist rally cars
MSA LICENCE: Rally National B Stage
DRIVING AGE: 17 with full RTA licence
PASSENGER/NAVIGATOR: Yes (14 years plus)
ENTRY FEE: £200+


Stage Rally (Multivenue):
As above but the stages and not all confined to a single venue. Competitors have to arrive at the venue at a pre-defined time and be ready to start the stage when instructed. Helmets are not allowed to be worn on ‘road sections’.
CARS: Bespoke/Specialist rally cars
MSA LICENCE: Rally National B upwards.
DRIVING AGE: From 17 with full RTA licence
PASSENGER/NAVIGATOR: Yes (16 years plus)
ENTRY FEE: £300+
